Participants learn about helpful tools, programs, and services designed to support people managing Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, as well as their family members and caregivers.

In this Empower SD Education Session, Dr. Jed Assam, from VRA Vision, discusses diabetic retinopathy (diabetes in the eye). The presentation covers risk factors for progression, recommendations for eye health and screening, and modern management including resources for learning more about diabetic retinopathy.

The presentation covers the process of developing a 504 plan, common accommodations, and the importance of communication between families, schools, and healthcare providers. Katie also shares practical tips for addressing diabetes care during classroom activities, testing, field trips, and extracurricular activities, while helping students become more independent in managing their diabetes.
