What is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES)?
"A Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist® (CDCES®) (previously know as a Certified Diabetes Educator, or CDE) is a health professional who possesses comprehensive knowledge of and experience in diabetes prevention, prediabetes, and diabetes management. The CDCES educates, supports, and advocates for people affected by diabetes, addressing the stages of diabetes throughout the lifespan. The CDCES promotes self-management to achieve individualized behavioral and treatment goals that reduce risks and optimize health outcomes."*
The following steps outline the process to become a CDE:
Practice for at least two years in one of the fields/areas listed above
Complete a minimum of 1,000 hours providing diabetes education
Obtain a minimum of 15 continuing education hours
Submit an official application to the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE)
Once application is approved by the NCBDE, schedule and sit for the exam

What is the process to become a CDCES?

The CDCES Certification is designed for health professionals who have the responsibilities that include the direct provision of diabetes education. Individuals with an active license in the following disciplines are eligible to become a CDCES:
- Registered Nurse (including Nurse Practitioners)
- Pharmacist
- Physician (MD or DO)
- Podiatrist
- Optometrist
- Occupational Therapist
- Physical Therapist
In addition to the above disciplines, individuals with registrations and/or certifications from the following areas are eligible to become a CDCES:
- Dietitian
- Physicians Assistant
- Exercise Psychologist
- Health Educator (Master Certified Health Education Specialist)
- Health Care Professional with a Master's Degree in Social Work
For those who do not meet the above qualifications, a "Unique Qualifications" pathway is offered for those who may qualify and practice as a health professional holding an advanced degree in other health related concentrations/majors. Click here for more information.
